Originally built as a logging trail by the Lexington and Eastern Railroad in the late 1800s, the Original Trail at Natural Bridge is one of the most popular hiking trails in the Gorge for a reason. It mixes convenience, history, nature, and beautiful views to create a trail you may want to return to again and again.

The Original Trail takes you on a well marked, wide path a little over 1/2 mile up to the namesake Natural Bridge for an unforgettable lookout over some of the best scenery in Eastern Kentucky. And, though it may be classified as an “easy” trail, the strenuous incline will certainly work your glutes.

The hike takes you over a series of inclines and stairs on the way up. However, you will have plenty of opportunities to catch your breath as needed – the trail is filled with informational plaques on the history of the trail and information on the varied fauna and flora surrounding you. Part of the history even includes small rest stops with shelter and benches built in the 1930s by the Civilian Conservation Corps.

After you climb the 400 feet to the top of the trail, visit the Natural Bridge, and take your panoramic pictures, it is time to descend back down.

We like to park at the main trailhead parking and take the Lakeside Trail, a short 1/4 mile flat hike around the lake and across a small, but fun, walking bridge to lead us to the Original Trail.

Details:

  • Unfortunately, no dogs are allowed
  • Definitely bring the kids for this hike, but keep a close hold on the young ones when you reach the natural bridge
